OpenAI is quietly working on a new feature that might change how you log into your favorite apps. Dubbed “Sign in with ChatGPT,” this upcoming tool could let users use their ChatGPT credentials to access third-party services — from shopping platforms to productivity apps.
While still in the testing phase, the company recently posted a developer interest form to gather feedback and explore integration opportunities. The idea mirrors what tech giants like Google, Apple, and Microsoft already offer: a seamless sign-in experience that removes the hassle of remembering countless passwords. But OpenAI’s version could tap directly into its 600 million-strong monthly user base — a number that’s growing fast.
This isn’t just about convenience. It’s a strategic move. By embedding ChatGPT deeper into the digital ecosystem, OpenAI is positioning itself as more than just an AI chatbot provider — it’s aiming to become a central login identity for the internet.
Developers are already getting a sneak peek. Earlier this month, OpenAI introduced a preview of the feature within Codex CLI, its open-source coding assistant for terminals. Users could link their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their OpenAI API credentials. As a sweetener, Plus users received $5 in API credits, while Pro subscribers got a generous $50 boost just for testing it out.
For developers, OpenAI’s interest form is more than a basic sign-up. It asks for detailed info: How big is your user base? Do you already monetize AI features? Are you using OpenAI’s API? The message is clear — OpenAI wants to scale this feature widely, not just with startups, but also with enterprise-level apps that attract millions.
The company hasn’t confirmed when “Sign in with ChatGPT” will go live or which apps will support it. But the wheels are clearly in motion. The move aligns with previous remarks from CEO Sam Altman, who hinted back in 2023 that a unified OpenAI sign-in service was on the horizon.
And while there’s no official launch date, developers and tech insiders are already buzzing. As one post on X recently put it: “Sign in with ChatGPT is about to be EVERYWHERE.”
If OpenAI pulls this off, the ChatGPT login button might soon be as common as Google or Apple’s — transforming how we connect to the web, one AI-powered tap at a time.
